Joyful family photography in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Durham, & the NC Triangle

"It's one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it's another thing to make a portrait of who they are."

-John Paul Caponigro

For families that want fun, authentic imagery that focuses on personality over perfection.

Hi, I'm Danell — and I have been doing this for nearly 20 years because I genuinely, deeply love it.

Not just the photography part. The people part.

I love the nervous family who shows up convinced their kids won't cooperate and leaves completely surprised by how fun it was. I love the senior who swears they're awkward in front of a camera and then absolutely lights up the moment we start talking about something they care about. I love the new mom holding her three-day-old like she still can't quite believe this tiny person is real. I love the chaos, the laughter, the in-between moments, the ones nobody planned.

Here's something I love about this work that maybe surprises people: I don't just walk away from sessions with beautiful images. I walk away with new friendships. Because that's always what it becomes. The people who invite me into their lives and their most fleeting, precious moments don't stay strangers for long — and I think that shows in every single frame.

You cannot make soul-filled images of people you don't truly see. And I see everyone I photograph.

I'm a Fine Art and Photography graduate, a Chapel Hill local, a mom, genuinely silly, and someone who will make a complete fool of herself to get a real laugh out of your four-year-old. No judgment, no pressure, no fake smiles. Just real moments, beautifully made — and usually a new friend by the time we're done.

Family photos with the comfort of home.

The details of your home give a snapshot of what your everyday life FEELS like and what you will want to remember as your life changes through the years.

    Beacuse these moments matter

It’s true what they say about days being long and years being short. As a parent, it is It is important to hold on to these details of your life when they were young.

The experience is as important as the imagery.

Photographs have a special way of taking us back to the moment in time when the image was made. Because I want you to look back at your photos and remember the joy of being together, I strive to make our sessions easy and fun for everyone.

Trust me, don’t put this off until that “perfect time”.

As a mom of a young child, I know how quickly time passes right in front of your eyes. How fast your babies sweet round face turns into that of a child… how their personalities grow into something bigger than you had imagined… and how much you celebrate their growth while simultaneously longing to slow down time altogether.

Please don’t put this off until you have “lost the baby weight” or for your idea of that “perfect time”. You are living through this wonderful stage of life, RIGHT NOW. I promise you will never look back and regret having images that document your life at this time, and your kids will ask to look at these images over and over again as they grow up.

Nothing makes me feel more joy than being a mom. The love we share with our children is unparalleled and I strive to help you document the sweetness of every aspect of it.

Giving Back

"No one has ever become poor by giving." — Anne Frank

I am deeply, genuinely lucky. Lucky to live and work in one of the most vibrant, generous, and warm communities in North Carolina. Lucky to do work that I love every single day. And lucky to be surrounded by the schools, organizations, and families that make Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and the Triangle such a special place to call home.

Because of that, giving back isn't something I do out of obligation — it's something I do out of pure joy.

Every year I donate to local schools, preschools, and organizations working to uplift and support marginalized communities in our area. It's one of the most meaningful parts of running this business, and honestly one of the things I'm most proud of. I believe deeply that a community thrives when its most vulnerable members are seen, supported, and celebrated — and if my camera can play even a small role in that, I'm all in.

One of the ways I make this happen is through fundraiser sessions — and I hold them throughout the year. These aren't token gestures. 100% of every session fee goes directly to the organization. Every single dollar. Because being a part of this community is the gift — and giving back is just what you do when you're grateful.

Fundraiser sessions are held throughout the year and vary in scope depending on the organization. School fundraisers take place on pre-determined dates and are a fun, easy way for families to get beautiful photos while supporting something that matters.

Feel the love

What people are saying

“Danell is an absolute magician with small children. My kid who won’t smile for photos blossoms for her. You’ll see how amazing she is with kids during your session, but you still won’t be prepared for how exquisitely beautiful the final photos will be. Her photos somehow capture exactly how I see my kids in real life, with the thoroughness and love of a mother’s gaze..”

- Angie B.

Danell is amazing! She has been shooting our family for almost 5 years and has captured our growing children, our aging parents, our laughter and special moments, and each of our personalities in ways that only someone with her intuition could do. She shows up with an open mind and a creative personality and always surprises us with how her vision translates into amazing photos! She has hiked through our forested yard, met us at community parks, and thrown together gorgeous shots with nothing but a black backdrop or our fading couch. Our kids adore her, and she always knows when to make a funny noise or throw out a silly joke to get everyone smiling. She is nothing short of magical in how she can capture the most special aspects of life with her camera.

-Erin R.

“Danell is an absolutely fabulous photographer—she knows how to help families relax and get children to give a true smile. Her photographs are fantastic keepsakes and symbols of artistry.”

- Sommer T.

Danell has photographed me and my kids for years. It is beyond wonderful to see our lives chronicled through her creative eyes. Her buoyant personality makes her great with kids, so their pictures come out natural and full of joy. She captures everything, there’s so much depth of feeling and beauty to her work. We LOVE working with Danell.

-Toby W.

“Danell is supremely talented in-person and behind the editing screen. She instantly puts us at ease at our sessions, despite my “run in opposite directions,” high energy, young family + the dog, because of course we bring ALL of the chaos. She has an eye for capturing each personality and makes a sometimes stressful investment completely worthwhile. We cherish our annual Danell pics since moving to Chapel Hill.”

- Sarah S.

“Danell made what is usually an anxiety-inducing event for us a pleasant and fun one! Family photos stress me out, but this felt like having a friend hang out and take awesome photos we loved. Win win win. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Both the process and the product are wonderful.”

- Sarah T.

Danell, while an incredibly gifted artist, is so much fun to be around, you can’t help but love the results of her work. Our faces and body language show the world how we feel, and with Danell behind the camera, you see the effects of being in the presence of someone loving, silly, and entirely present. Some of my favorite images of my family have come from this groovy lady.

-Holly L

Danell is a local treasure. She takes our family's photos every year. She has a way of making us all laugh and enjoy the process-- which admittedly is quite a task, working with a bunch of introverts like us! Sometimes I start to stress the day before our photos, [should I have planned our clothes more thoughtfully? did I wash my child's hair?], but once I arrive, she puts me at ease. And every time, our photos seem to capture the happy essence of family where all of those details fade away, and what you see is joy.

Voted Hulafrog’s Most Loved Family Photographer

( 4 Years in a row! )

I enjoy documenting the unfiltered, raw, REAL lives of fun-loving families that laugh often and love without abandon. My goal is to create a collection of artistic, emotive images that will be a lasting memoir for remembering life's messy, beautiful moments. My sincere hope is that, as time passes, your children will be able to look back on these images and be able to see the same love and appreciation for you as you have for them.
